Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
The practice of making a brand's content more likely to be cited and summarised accurately by AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
Definition
Search is changing from a list of links to a generated answer. AI answer engines retrieve web pages, pass them to an LLM and produce a synthesised response with a handful of citations. Generative engine optimization is the set of practices that increase the chance your pages are retrieved, trusted and quoted in those answers. The term was popularised by a 2023 academic paper that measured which content changes raised visibility in generated answers.
GEO overlaps with search engine optimisation but shifts the emphasis. Being crawlable and authoritative still matters, because answer engines lean on search indexes. On top of that, content needs to be easy for a model to extract: direct answers near the top, clear definitions, statistics with sources, consistent entity names, structured data and, where supported, machine-readable guides such as llms.txt. Measurement means tracking your presence across a set of prompts over time.
Example: a vector database vendor rewrites its comparison page with a plain-English summary, a specification table and a dated benchmark. Within weeks it is cited in AI answers to "which vector database should I use for RAG?", where its competitors' feature-led pages are not.
What it means in practice
- A growing share of research and purchasing now starts with an AI answer rather than a list of links.
- Being absent from those answers is invisible in your analytics until traffic has already shifted.
- Being misrepresented is worse than being absent; accurate, current content is the defence.
- It rewards exactly the content that also serves human readers well, so the work is rarely wasted.

Frequently asked questions
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. AI answer engines draw heavily on conventional search indexes, so technical SEO, crawlability and authority still matter. GEO adds a layer focused on being quoted and represented correctly.
How do we measure GEO?
Track a set of prompts relevant to your business across the main AI engines, record whether and how you are cited, and watch referral traffic from those engines. The tools are young; the discipline is in consistent measurement.
What content works best?
Clear, factual pages that answer specific questions, with named entities, data, definitions and up-to-date details. Pages that read like marketing copy are rarely quoted.
